February Picks: Brands That Give Back

    Brands that Give Back

Brands that Give Back by sweet-helen-grace featuring sparkly necklaces
    As many of
you already know, when I’m not working on this blog I work for a
nonprofit doing marketing and fundraising. Based on my choice of career,
I think that it’s needless to say that making a difference in my
community is something that is very dear and close to my heart.

For that reason, I am always excited when I find brands that are dedicated to giving back. I find that I feel so much better about spending money on myself when I know that I’m still doing something small to help communities in need. In order to inspire my readers to make more mindful purchases, I wanted to dedicate my February Picks to brands that I feel are doing amazing work in the community:

    1. Angela & Roi is a brand dedicated to promoting and giving back to important causes through simple and classic handbag designs. I first heard about Angela & Roi while I was browsing through and was immediately intrigued by the brand’s tagline “Angela & Roi: Where Fashion meets Philanthropy,” because it demonstrates their commitment to making products with a purpose. For every handbag that Angela & Roi sells, the company donates a portion of each sale to nonprofit organizations specializing in widespread health issues.

What really makes Angela & Roi unique is their “Donate by Color” concept which links different nonprofit organizations and causes with a specific color. In addition, every Angela & Roi handbag comes with a different color ribbon representing a specific health issue. Therefore the “Donate by Color” concept basically means that when you buy a bag in a certain color you are not only donating to a specific cause, but you are also taking the initiative to promote awareness about a particular health issue in your community.

I love that Angela & Roi is dedicated to promoting awareness about a variety of health issues. I’m really looking forward to purchasing their Square Gray Tote to promote awareness about Diabetes, and their Classic Red Cross-Body Bag to promote AIDS Awareness, in the near future.

    2. 31 Bits is an awesome jewelry company that uses fashion and design to empower women in Uganda to rise above poverty. In order to accomplish this goal, 31 Bits offers a 5-year program to women in Uganda, which allows them to earn income while teaching them to create beautiful quality jewelry. While participating in the program, women are also able to have access to several services provided by 31 Bits including mentorship, counseling, and health education. The overall purpose of 31 Bits’ program is to help women graduate with their own business, and give them the skills they need to feel empowered and become educated.

I recently bought some bracelets from 31 Bits this summer while I was at the Make Music Festival in Pasadena. Aside from the amazing work that is being done by this company, what really caught my eye was the unique designs and vibrant colors used in each piece. I was also fascinated to learn that each piece of jewerly is made from recycled paper which makes them very eco-friendly.

    3. UncommonGoods is a shop dedicated to not only giving back to a variety of causes, but also selling products that are environmentally friendly and socially responsible. What is great about UncommonGood’s online market-place is that they sell a variety of products, making it easier for you to purchase with a purpose; the marketplace includes everything from art to clothes, and their products come in a variety of prices. UncommonGoods is great place to buy gifts for friends and family, because you are bound to find something for every special person in your life.

Products bought on UncommonGoods support the following nonprofit organizations: American Forests, Women for Women International, City Harvest and the Rape, Abuse & Incest National Network (RAINN)

That’s it for my February Picks. I hope that they can inspire you to make more meaningful purchases in the future!

    Weekend Attire

    Outfit 1 Details:
    H&M Lace Shirt (old)
    Ruche Eventide Marled Cardigan
    Paper Bag Trousers (old)
Lotta from Stockholm Peep Toe Clogs
    Anne Klein Satchel
    Outfit 2 Details:
    Madewell Sweater (old)
    H&M Shorts (old)
    White Mountain Heels (old)
All that I want to do every weekend is just lie around in my pajamas and do absolutely nothing. However, I know that if I do just that, I will regret not having done something fun and exciting later in the week.
I always find that the earlier that I manage to get dressed, the more likely that I am to get out of the house and actually do something. Even though I want to feel comfortable throughout the day, I also want to make it seem like I actually put some effort into my outfit. Luckily, over the years I have been able to
find clothes that are both comfortable and stylish at the same time. This makes getting dressed and out the door less challenging. Check out some of my recent weekend outfits:

I wore this outfit to brunch while my best friend Laura was in town last weekend. After brunch in Hollywood, we went on a mini excursion and made stops in Silverlake and the Griffith Observatory, before we got back to Pasadena. I wore these paper bag trousers because I wanted to be as comfortable as possible while we were running around town; these trousers are structured, but loose enough to be comfortable. I also wore this lace tee from H&M because I often feel that incorporating lace makes a casual outfit look just a bit more dressy.

This weekend was much more laid back for me, and I spent most of it in a coffee shop working. I wore these trouser shorts from H&M and a sparkly sweater from Madewell on one of my coffee runs. Even though this sweater is very sparkly and flashy, the fit is casual enough that I can pull off wearing it at various times of the day.

What do you all like to wear on the weekend? Do you have a go-to outfit when you want to feel comfortable without sacrificing your personal style? I’d love to hear from you.

Thanks for stopping by my blog!

Finally, you must let the people know that they have been nominated

Here are my answers to Aleksia’s Questions:

    1. What’s your favourite fashion account to follow?
I have several accounts that I love to follow, and they are all very different. I really like Keiko Lynn, M Loves M, Sincerely Jules and a Beautiful Mess.

    2. Who is your style inspiration
My biggest style inspiration is my Mother. I used to admire the way that she dressed growing up, and she has had a tremendous influence on my personal style. In terms of celebrities, I really like Rachel Bilson’s style and Cara Delevingne’s Style.

    3. Favourite colour?
My favorite colors are rose pink and teal.

    4. Most desired tote of Spring/Summer 2014?
I don’t have a particular item that I want from any upcoming Spring/Summer collection. I like to buy things that I know that I will keep forever and I’ve been really wanting to invest in a leather satchel from the Cambridge Satchel Company for quite a while.

    5. What is your most favourite place you’ve been to?
I made a weekend trip to Portugal while I was studying abroad in Spain, and I loved visiting the cities of Lisbon and Sintra. Both cities were very lively and beautiful, and the people there were so warm and welcoming. I loved visiting the Pena Palace in Sintra because it was straight out of a storybook.

    6. What’s the longest time you’ve been on an airplane?
I don’t know about the exact time I’ve spent on an airplane. But, when I was flying back home from my semester abroad in Spain, I was in and out of airports for at least 18 hours.

    7. What do you do for a living?
I work for a nonprofit and do marketing and fundraising for a living. Giving back to my community and inspiring social change are two things that are very important to me; I am extremely fortunate to be able to have a job that allows me to work towards improving my community.

    8. What two things would you take to a deserted island with you?
I would take a huge beach umbrella and a good book to read. I don’t think either of those items will really help me survive on a deserted island, but I’ll at least enjoy some of my time while I’m there.

    9. What’s your favourite movie?
I can’t really say that I have a favorite movie. I am very fidgety, and find it hard to sit down for more than an hour and focus on one thing. I hardly ever go to a movie theater. And, when I do, I end up walking out in the middle of a film screening and playing arcade games in the lobby of the theater.

    10. Grunge or prim and proper?
I would say that my style is prim and proper with a hint of grunge. My style is very girly, but I like to incorporate pieces that are a bit more edgy every once in a while.

    11. Where’s your next destination trip this year?
I wouldn’t quite describe this as a destination trip, but my next trip is to Austin to visit my friend Carly. I’m super excited! I’ve never been to Austin and I’m told that it’s a pretty awesome city.

Here are my answers to Lau’s questions:

    1. What’s the most stupid thing you’ve ever done?
Hmmm. It’s hard to pick just one thing.

    2. What is your favorite garment?
I really love sweaters and it’s hard for me to pick a favorite. I have this floral and polka dot printed sweater from Zara that I just love! I also own a really cute sparkly sweater from Madewell; it is very simple and girly at the same time.
    3. What is your Favorite brand?
Madewell always comes out with really cool collections each season, and I also really like Free People.
    4. Classy or Urban?
    Why choose?
    5. Which pizza do you prefer?
    6. Favorite Victoria Secrets model?
Lily Aldridge is gorgeous and I love her hair!
    7. What is your favorite candy?
    8. What is your favorite book?
I was an English major in college, so it is really hard for me to answer this question. The last book that I read that I really enjoyed was IQ84 by Haruki Murakami. Although the book is pretty lengthy, it was a very engaging and easy read.
    9. Describe your favorite shoe?
My favorite pair of shoes are a pair of simple, black leather combat boots. I loved that they were so comfortable and that I could pretty much wear them with anything I own. Unfortunately, I no longer own these boots because I wore them every day for two years straight.
    10. Favorite fashion magazine?
I can’t really say that I have a favorite fashion magazine. As much as I love clothes and dressing up, I try not to look at fashion magazines too much. I find advertising in magazines to be too problematic at times, so I don’t like leafing through them. I also don’t really like browsing through magazines because I prefer that my style be influenced by things that I truly like, instead of what is in style at the moment.
    11. If you were an animal or a fantasy creature what would you be?
Unicorn! Most people that I know are surprised when I say that because it totally doesn’t align with my sarcastic personality.

These are the blogs that I’m nominating:

These are my questions for my nominees:

    1. What inspired you to start blogging?
    2. If you could hop on a plane right now, where would you go?
    3. What is your favorite place to visit?
    4. Tell me a fun fact about yourself.
    5. What is the last book that you read and how did you like it?
    6.  What is your favorite hobby?
    7. What is your favorite food?
    8. What is your favorite item in your wardrobe.
    9. Describe your personal style.
