It was quite challenging for me to pack for my trip back home because I had to fit three weeks worth of clothes into a small carry-on bag and backpack. My trick for making it work was picking out a few versatile pieces. This long sleeve floral dress made the cut because it can be worn casually with a cardigan, it makes a great party dress with the right shoes, and it works as a top underneath skirts. The loose fit also makes it a great dress to wear during the holidays because you have more than enough room to indulge in all the dessert and holiday treats your heart desires.
Sweaters and accessories can also take up space in your bag, so it’s best to pick two or three pieces to take with you while on vacation. I decided to pack this chunky oversize cardigan because it’s warm enough to be my only layer in LA’s mild winter temperatures. This textured cowl, which I ordered off Raina Roo’s Etsy shop, was one of the two scarves that I brought with me, and I love that it’s extremely warm and cozy. By the way, Raina, the owner of Raina Roo, is a huge supporter of this blog and makes some of the cutest crocheted accessories, so go show her some love!
For those of you who are traveling this holiday season, I’d love to hear some of your packing tips for long trips. Also, if any of you are still doing some last minute shopping for gifts, you can check out my holiday gift guides here and here.

I’ve been home in LA for almost a week and I already feel like time is passing by too fast. I have a huge list of places that I want to visit while I’m here, but I have to keep reminding myself to take it easy because it won’t be long before I’m back in town. My sisters and I are planning a trip to The Broad Museum this week, so I’m excited to visit a place that I’ve never been to before. My sister Ale has already been there a few times and she claims it’s awesome. I’ll make sure to take a few pictures to share with you on the blog.
It’s also been nice to be back home and have time to catch up with family and friends. I wasn’t too good at keeping a good work and life balance during my first term of grad school, and it feels awesome to have some down time to just hang out with people. I’m definitely going to make more of an effort to connect with my friends and loved ones in the upcoming year. After all, I’m never going to feel fully settled in Portland if all I do is focus on school and work.
xoxo,
Helen
