The changing of the seasons often signifies it’s time for a refresh, most commonly in our wardrobe. That wardrobe update can be as simple as putting away pieces from the previous season and unpacking clothes fitting for the current temps. The reality, however, is that even after all this unpacking, many of us are left feeling frustrated and feeling like we have nothing to wear.
While investing in a new wardrobe is the most simple solution, it is not the most affordable or sustainable option. My workaround for this is purchasing items that will help me make the most of what I currently own. This means I don’t have to break the bank, lessen my environmental impact and still feel like I’m heading into the upcoming season with a fresh new look.
So are you ready to transition to the new season looking fresh and with minimal effort? These tips will help you consciously expand and maximize your wardrobe as we head into the summer months.
Invest in Good Basic Staples
Trust me when I say that having the right basics can do wonders for your wardrobe. A simple and versatile skirt can easily give that shirt hidden in the back of your closet new life. Similarly, a heavily embellished skirt can work for your everyday lifestyle when combined with a simple and easy tee.
This linen muscle tank and reconstructed denim skirt (both c/o of Everlane) are two sustainable summer basics I know will help me maximize my wardrobe these next few months. I really enjoy that they pair well together for a casual look, but can easily be worn with more dressy pieces as well.
Proving that all it takes is a good basic to transform your wardrobe, I’ve only had this denim skirt for two weeks and I’ve already worn it a few times. It served me well during my recent trip to LA, where I had to pack strategically in order to survive a whole week on only a few pieces of clothing. Keep in mind that this piece runs a little big, at least for me. I’m usually a size 26 but could have gone with the 25.
Take Inventory of Your Wardrobe and Fill in the Gaps
If you have some great basics but still don’t know what to wear, you might need to invest in more than just basics. A great way to mindfully build your wardrobe is to first take inventory of what you have and identify any gaps. For example, if you have a dress you really love but need a cardigan in order to be able to wear it to work, that’s a purchase you should probably add to your list.
Taking inventory is also a great time to clean out your closet and set aside pieces you’ve outgrown in a donation pile. Having fewer pieces in your wardrobe makes it easier for you to sort through and find things to wear. You also feel better about your wardrobe in general when every piece in your closet is something you love.
Focus on Versatility
Building a conscious wardrobe doesn’t have to be limiting or boring if you have the right pieces. Whenever you purchase something new, consider whether it fits in well with other items in your closet and whether it will stand the test of time. This will prevent you from wasting money on impulse purchases and help you pick clothes you’ll love for years. It’s a win, win!
I hope you enjoyed all enjoyed these tips and that they help you make some mindful purchases this summer! Let me know if you have any of your own tips to share.
