Part of the excitement of moving into a new apartment for me is finding ways to embed my personality into my new home. I have to admit that when my sister first sent me photos and videos of this bedroom, I was afraid that I wouldn’t be able to do much with it. This space didn’t have a closet, the walls were orangish-yellow, and I couldn’t picture fitting in all of my things.
After spending the past few weeks sprucing it up, however, I’ve managed to transform this small space into the boho minimalist retreat of my dreams. Keep reading to learn how I’ve made this new space my own.

Finding the Perfect Room Layout
In my opinion, a good room layout should be aesthetically pleasing and allow you to move comfortably around the room. If you remember my studio apartment in Portland, I had my bed against a window and my dresser right next to it as a nightstand. That layout, however, didn’t work in this new space. Because my new room is more narrow, I had to find a more space-efficient arrangement.
I was lucky that my dresser fits perfectly against the wall next to the door. While I wanted to use the huge window as a headboard as I did at my old apartment, that left me with very little walking space. Instead, I opted to put my bed in a corner and against the wall opposite my dresser. Putting most of my bulky furniture items to one side of the room allows me to have a clear walkway that makes it easy to move around.
Simple Decor Details Can Go a Long Way
My goal whenever I update a space is to do so without spending too much money. An easy way to do that is by adding new details such as pillows. The handmade mud cloth pillow I bought from Appetite is sold out, but they have plenty of other beautiful handmade finds.
I also decided to make my own headboard using this tutorial from Collective Gen. Overall, I paid around $50-70 for all the materials and it truly helps tie the room together.
To add a few decorative items while keeping a minimalist feel to my decor, I decided to put up triangle shelves. This is an easy way to display little knick-knacks without adding clutter to my space.

Use Plants to Liven Up a Room
One of the most simple and affordable ways to make a space look lively is by adding in a few plants. I usually tend to go for air-purifying plants that are low maintenance. Snake plants, Chinese evergreen, and pothos are really easy to maintain year-round and immediately add a nice pop of green to a room.
